Gaza Violence
Publication date: 2008-12-31

And How the Conflict Can Be Resolved

Another splash of violence in the “Middle East”, and the “International Community” are quick to issue “condemnations”, to adopt postures of “peacemakers” and to apportion the blame.

Some blame the Israelis, other the Hamas, but why are they fighting?

In spite of the promises by George Bush of a Palestinian State by 2005, in spite of the numerous visits of Condoleza Rice, and in spite of the establishment of the Quartet for Resolution of the Middle East Conflict and of Tony Blair being its Special Envoy and such events as “Annapolis”, the “conflict” remains unresolved. And the present Gaza violence is just a part of that “conflict”.

But what is this conflict about?

Most of the Palestinian Arabs in Gaza and many in the West Bank are refugees or descendants of refugees who were expelled from their land and houses to make room for the present State of Israel. They are fighting to get their land and houses back.

The Israelis see Palestine as their historical Land of Israel, and are fighting to defend whatever parts of Palestine they had taken to form the State of Israel and seeking to take more of the Palestinian land from the Arabs.

But who has created this situation?

After the Second World War the International Community decided to establish the State of Israel as a national state of the Jews, who at that time did not have a nation state of their own. Britain was given by the League of Nations (now the United Nations) a mandate to administer that process. And in 1948 the State of Israel was formally established and recognised by the “International Community”.

Britain, however, had failed to administer the establishment of the State of Israel in a just and orderly way. As a result some million Arabs were driven out of their houses to make way for Israeli settlements. This is evidenced by the United Nations Resolution 194 (1948–12–11), Article 11 of which reads as follows:

“that the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbours should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property which, under principles of international law or in equity, should be made good by the Governments or authorities responsible”.

The above resolution had not been implemented, and being unable to return to their houses by peaceful means, the Palestinians began an armed struggle for the return to their land, which became known as the “Middle East Conflict”.

But rather than resolving the conflict by implementation of the UN Resolution 194, the International Community took a side in the conflict, supporting the Israelis.

The most ardent supporter of Israel were the governments of the USA. They gave to Israel diplomatic, financial and military support.

Thus, the so‐called Middle East Conflict was caused by the International Community who had established the State of Israel.

But instead of resolving the Conflict on the basis of Justice (as per the UN Resolution 194), the International Community are posing as “peacemakers”, while effectively encouraging its continuation by supporting one of the parties and seeking to impose unjust conditions on the other.

So, how can the conflict be resolved?
